During the fourth episode of The Borderlands Show, Anthony Nicholson who serves as the Borderlands 3 Head of DLC Production, was asked specifically about potential new rarity tiers such as Pearlescent and Effervescent level weapons. Nicholson confirmed that Gearbox currently has no plans to do that. Instead, the studio is focused on utilizing the weapon system to create more permutations, completely new weapons, and unique modifiers for post-launch events and downloadable content packs. For now, players will have to settle with Legendary being the highest level.

This news may disappoint some longtime fans who were hoping for new gear to hunt. In fact, Pearlescent level weapons have been a staple of both Borderlands and its sequel. Originally introduced inside of The Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC, these weapons would have a teal colored name with typically very small odds of appearing. In Borderlands 2, Pearlescent weapons could only appear at the highest difficulties and even required at least one Ultimate Vault Hunter upgrade pack to spawn.

On the other hand, Effervescent weapons were added to Borderlands 2 over the summer alongside the Commander Lilith & The Fight for Sanctuary. Also known as rainbow loot due to the unique look and cycling colors of the gear name, these were highly elusive but largely the best loot inside of the game. In order to find these items, players had to be on Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode for a chance to find one. Many of them have unique effects or synergies like the Unicornsplosion which fires explosive unicorns.

Even without these powerful options, Gearbox is making sure to continually give Borderlands 3 players new gear to chase. The latest comes with the newest DLC campaign, Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot. As expected, there’s a ton of new loot to chase including shields, mods, skins, and of course, weapons. One such legendary that seems to be gaining the attention of players is the Lucky 7 pistol. What’s unique about this weapon is that on reload, a randomized slot machine can add a random effect to the ammo like amped rounds, full auto fire rate until reload, elemental damage, explosive rounds, or one bullet splitting into seven after being fired. Better yet, there’s a chance that the reload can add multiple effects at one time.

Borderlands 3 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
