The Compressing Superball, a Legendary pistol, shoots incendiary bullets – and only incendiary bullets. While many other guns can switch elements, this one cannot. It projects its ammo out as a fireball that explodes on impact and deals splash damage.

Fireballs just happens to also be the signature power of a very famous plumber. If there was any doubt, in the description area of the gun it reads “Flower power,” which can only be a reference to the Super Mario Bros. series. The gun itself isn’t all that powerful, which is a shame, but it’s still fun to play around with. Borderlands has a long history of Nintendo Easter eggs within its games, and has referenced Mario before. But it has also implanted Easter eggs of characters like Donkey Kong as well.

As previously mentioned, many of the game’s references are associated with weapons, but there are plenty more to be found in dialogue, quests, or even enemies names. Take, for instance, a humorous reference to another popular looter shooter set in space that can be found after completing Chapter 9 of the main campaign in Borderlands 3. On the bounty board, players can find a rare side mission that will lead them to a Destiny Easter egg. The target of this mission is a floating orb named Dinklebot, a reference to the Ghost companion in the game whose original voice actor was Peter Dinklage.

For people just starting out in Borderlands 3, encountering all of the available Easter eggs will require progressing through the bulk of the game and beyond. There have been a lot of previews on the new Vault Hunters in the sequel, so some may already know which they best relate to. But for those still on the fence, check out the guide on which Borderlands 3 character to choose.
