The highly anticipated Mayhem 2.0 Update for Borderlands 3 completely changes the way the mode currently works. First and foremost, players no longer need to visit Sanctuary III in order to change or activate Mayhem levels. Instead, the options will be housed inside of the ECHO Device menu. Better yet, when playing multiplayer, the game will attempt to match players who are running a similar Mayhem level, though it will ultimately be determined by the host player.

Mayhem 2.0 introduces 10 levels with 25 modifiers all classed into difficulty levels. Easy modifiers are generally helpful to the player and include perks like Galaxy Brain which increase the size of enemy heads to make it easier to get critical hits. Gearbox also revealed Big Kick Energy which increases the player’s weapon damage but also increases the recoil and spread as well. Mayhem level 1 only uses Easy modifiers, though the 9 other levels will also include one in the mix as well.

Medium level modifiers are where the challenge starts to increase and will be seen starting at Mayhem level 2. Floor is Lava was highlighted which forms a pool of damaging lava under the player if they stand still for too long.

Hard modifiers start to appear at Mayhem level 4 and the example Gearbox gave was called Drone Ranger, which gives enemies healing drones. Very Hard is the last difficulty level and while Gearbox decided not to provide an example so that players can discover them for themselves, they’ll start to get put into effect by Mayhem level 8.

Naturally, the higher the level, the greater the challenge. However, the same can be said for the loot that drops as well. Considering that enemy health, shield, and armor stats increase with each Mayhem level, weapons that drop in each level are also increased. Eight new legendary weapons can also be found on Mayhem level 6 or above like the Sand Hawk auto sniper. It fires a ling of nine bullets that move in a pattern like a hawk flapping its wings.

For those who enjoy competition, A Mayhem Mode Ladder will track and display a list of the ultimate vault hunters. Thankfully, players don’t have to wait too long to finally dive into the chaos as Mayhem 2.0 launches alongside the Revenge of the Cartels event in the April 23 update.

Borderlands 3 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
