There have been a total of 20 different vault hunters throughout the history of Borderlands, but four of those are DLC characters which were not included in the list of available choices. Instead, the four main vault hunters from each of the games up to Borderlands 3 are shown.

The exclusion of popular DLC characters Krieg, Gaige, Jack, and Aurelia was disappointing to some, and there seems to be a particular desire for Krieg to be included on the list. Nevertheless, fans have flooded the comments with their own dream teams, some following the rules laid down and some ignoring them completely.
Taking a closer look at the rows, it is clear that the Borderlands 3 account is grouping vault hunters into roles of sorts. The first row, which is comprised of Salvador, Brick, Claptrap, and Moze, are all heavier characters that are capable of filling the role of tank or heavy weapons expert. The second row features Amara, Maya, Lilith, and Athena, all of whom are Sirens or Siren-like. Row three shows Zero, Nisha, Fl4k, and Mordecai, characters that focus on marksmanship, hunting, or the use of animal companions, and the final row features technology-focused vault hunters Roland, Zane, Axton, and Wilhelm.
Although there are plenty that played along with the activity, most of the top comments are people upset that Gaige and Krieg didn’t make the list. It is clear that they were excluded because they are DLC characters, there has been a rising call for those characters to make a return in Borderlands 3, or for that game to get its own DLC characters. For those that did actually participate, the results are spread pretty evenly across the board, showing that there definitely isn’t one set of characters that are clearly the favorite among fans.
It’s unclear whether this is hinting at some kind of event or if it was simply a way to engage with fans, but if the former were true that would be very exciting. Borderlands 3 has been receiving consistent updates since its release last year, and fans couldn’t be happier with how the game is being handled post launch.
Borderlands 3 is available now for Mac, PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
