Savage created a website (benforweho) to announce his intentions to run for a seat on West Hollywood City Council. Savage has lived in West Hollywood for almost two decades and believes he can bring a sense of community to the city that in his opinion, has been divided over the past several years. He went into detail regarding why he is running on the web page.

“I am running for City Council because there are serious challenges ahead, and West Hollywood deserves sensible, honest and strong leadership to face them,” Savage said on his website. “I’m a longtime resident, union member, and concerned citizen who believes West Hollywood deserves leaders who will deliver results. The city is facing serious challenges around public safety, struggling businesses, inflation, and the cost of housing. We need new leaders with a fresh perspective who are ready to begin tackling these issues.” Savage would go on to explain what West Hollywood’s needs are. “We need to restore faith in city government by offering reasonable, innovative, and compassionate solutions to the city’s most pressing issues. We need to increase and expand access to all the great opportunities West Hollywood affords by ensuring that every member of the community has the tools they need to succeed.”
Savage starred in Boy Meets World from 1993 to 2000 and the show’s reboot/follow-up Girl Meets World alongside his co-star of the show’s predecessor Danielle Fishel from 2014 to 2017. Shortly after Boy Meets World ended, Savage graduated from Stanford University with a degree in political science in 2004 and interned for US Senator Arlen Specter in 2003 to complete his major. Savage is among the several actors who have gone into politics, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Eastwood, Ronald Reagan, and Al Franken. Whether people will support his campaign because of his reputation as an actor remains to be seen.
Outside of Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World, Savage hasn’t acted much. Of course, he never really had to, knowing the success he had as a star on a popular sitcom. Also, it’s very possible that his candidacy to run for city council in West Hollywood demonstrates where his priorities are currently at. Plenty of actors, both adults and children, went on to different ventures after their popular shows ended, and not just in politics. Either they don’t find work as an actor, or they feel more fulfilled doing a different line of work. There’s nothing wrong with that.
Ben Savage is at least doing better than his brother Fred Savage is nowadays. Considering that Fred Savage was fired from The Wonder Years reboot for alleged inappropriate conduct on the set, it’s fair to say that Ben Savage is doing better on the premise that he’s keeping himself out of trouble. Hopefully Ben Savage will get support because of the changes he could bring to West Hollywood and not because of how well audiences know him as Cory Matthews.
Boy Meets World can currently be streamed on Disney Plus.
